I drive a 1999 Odyssey. A few months ago the engine began to shut off at random times while I was driving. I''d have the radio on, air on, & suddenly everything including all dashboard lights would turn off. I''d have to coast to the side of the road. Engine restarts right away & the car runs fine. Dealership had it for days & test drove it & couldn''t reproduce engine cutting off. Checked charging systems, battery & alternator OK. Shut off 2x last week. 1st time, ABS,TCS,Brake Lights went on, then engine turned off. Dealership found no codes. 2nd time, everything went dark & just like the other times. Car has 145,000 mi & following maintenance schedule with dealership. Dealership kept car again & checked systems & test drove it (40 miles). Everything was OK, again.

Optional Information:
1999 Honda Odyssey 3.5L, V6

Already Tried:
Dealership: test drove several times & did charging system checks for battery & alternator , diagnostic codes checked - none found.

Hi, welcome to Just Answer. I'm acuramstr. sounds like a classic ignition switch failure to me .im very suprised that when you told the dealer that the car shut off and the lights on the dash went out they didn't suggest this. there was a recall for the ignition switch on this vehicle was it done? even if it was it could still wear out if its been a while .let me know what you think.

Ignition replaced in 2002 because of recall. Done by same dealership.

since its been this long ago it still could wear out . i think thats what your problem is try moving the key slightly back and forth and see if the car stumbles .

Tried to reproduce with jiggling - no luck. Can poor (old) soddering in main relay be a problem?

the main relays go out in these as well but usally they prevent the car from starting and they won't cause the dash lights to go out. check the back of the ignition switch for signs of overheating and check the solder on the back to see if it is melting.
