I have a 1998 Honda Prelude and I am getting a diagnostice code of P0700 which is a transmission control system malfunction. The car will stop shifting out of first but if I let it set for a while it will start to shift but it is not normal. I am wondering if I replace the TCM will that solve my problem. If I replace it is is just a matter of unplugging one module and plugging in new one? Is it a DIY project or straight to the shop.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The P0700 is a base code for the transmittion. It will be set and stored in the PCM under the engine section. There is another code that breaks down this code into more detail. Its usually under the trans section. If you used a Generic scanner im not sure that you will be able to retrieve it. You can flash out the D4 light and that will give me a better idea of what system is reported failing.

The second part is that Yes the TCM is as easy as unbolting and unplugging. Than reinstalling the new one in the reverse order. Its not a hard repair and a simple DIYer can do it.

Im not really sure that this is your problem though.

Have you checked the trans fluid yet? Level, color and smell?

I had the fluid changed about a month before the transmission started doing this, but I haven't check it since.
