We have a 2003 Honda element that will not start without extensive grinding after about 32 degrees or lower. The car has 50,000 miles. If cold enough, it won't start at all.

We turn the key to "on" and it sounds like we have connection with the battery, thus the grinding sound but the engine do not turn over. There is something on the right side of the dashboard that clicks during this process.
Two mechanics have failed to find the problem.
Tried relays, heat sensor, check system wiring for code "P0685", (whatever that means). They checked the power feed from relay to the fuel pump. Voltage readings are all normal. We are stumped!!! Mike Dart
