My 1989 Honda CRX 1.5 HF (manual transmission)

My 1989 Honda CRX 1.5 HF (manual transmission) has suddenly began losing power on acceleration and the engine revs up without notice, including during and after shifting. It is troublesome because when on the highway and needing to merge or speed up, the engine revs and I can't get any power.
