our 2003 Honda Element has 118,000 miles and is serviced regularly. Today the maintenance light and engine lights came on and the car struggled while accelerating to 50 mph. Is their a scheduled maintenance that would cause this to happen or should I assume that there is a larger more complicated engine problem with this vehicle?

Most likely, your accelleration problem is related to what ever turned the check engine light on. You will need to get the computer checked for codes to see why the light came on. Depending upon where you live, you might be able to get the codes read for free at your nearest auto parts store. Let me know what you find out about the codes.
