My 2004 Element EX 4wd 5sp has a front end ...

Sent to Honda Experts January 07 8:01 p.m.

My 2004 Element EX 4wd 5sp has a front end vibration in the drive train upon acceleration, mostly in 2nd & 3rd gears. Sort of a thumping. Definitely drive train related as it goes away with depression of the clutch. Not axel or tires.

Optional Information:
2004 Element EX 4wd 2.4

Already Tried:
Changed tires, checked CV and axles both good.

It isn't the exhaust. Pushing clutch erases problem.

I've had numerous hondas for 24 years. Initially it seemed to be a slam dunk axle problem, but the removal of torque removes the thumping. the thumping is in meter with wheel rotation as it becomes faster with speed. The only thing I can remember is that while driving in snow recently, acceleration caused the tires to "hop". I quickly let off the gas and can't imagine that this was a cause/affect situation. Any thoughts?

hi, i looked over honda database there were different types of vibrations. allot of the issues talked about tires, engine mounts and lower control arm bushings. if you knock it out of gear does the vibration go away? i know you said that when you pushed in on the clutch it when away. give me a speed and an rpm when it happens. whats the mileage on your element? when you are torquing the engine the engine rocks to the rear. i will check into this further and repost on Tuesday.

I "kicked" it out of gear ... no thumping. It seems to be only when engaged. It also seems to be thumping in all gears, it is just more noticeable in 2nd and 3rd. It is most noticeable between 2800 and 4000 rpm.

One other note ... it doesn't seem as bed when the car is cold (here in new england) in the morning. As the car warms, so goes the thumping.
