Hi, welcome to jA.

  • Can you list all the parts replaced?
  • How many miles are on it?

Thanks, a stuttering feeling on acceleration is most often due to a Ignition Spark concern. I doubt it's a computer concerns, but it may be a sensor in the distributor problem. These are famouse for distributor problems...typically the Ignition Coil, the Ignitor, or the sensors go bad causing the intermitant loss of spark. All these are integrated inside the distributor. More commonly it is the Ignitor or the Ignition Coil. To correctly test, you would need access to an oscilliscope, so it's much simpler to replace the entire distributor and elliminate all of them as a possibility. You may just opt to replace the coil and ignitor and see if that takes care of it.

Is it possible then to "rule out" it being an injector problem and move on to the distributor?

Does the ignition problems better explain the carbon fouled plugs than an injector problem would?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Yes it does, a miss from the ignition spark will cause the fuel to partially burn, thus the excess carbon...however, in order for an injector to cause a "black," looking spark plug...it would need to be delievering too much fuel, but not enough to wash the plug...also this would usually indicate a richer than normal condition and usually black puffs of smoke from the tailpipe as well. So the circumstances for the injector to cause the exact symptoms you describe, would be less of a possibility, than for the Ignition Sytsem to cause this....more common than the distributor parts are the basic tune parts you have already replaced...
