Question

Honda CRX intermittent no start?

Sent to Honda Experts August 16, 2006 10:17 p.m.

I have two Honda CRX's 1989 & 1991 both 1.5L DX's both have an intermittent no start and both throw code 16 fuel injector. Let them sit for a little while and they will restart. Both cars injectors check good as per the shop manual. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!!! Customer (name blocked for privacy).

hey Customer (name blocked for privacy).

This is a very common problem on these vehicles.

here is a few things that you can check in order to ssee if the following is causing the problem.

the fuel pump main relay normally likes to go out on these cars.

Next time that the vehicles do not start try the following.

locate the fuel pump main relay.

Unplug it from its connector and jump the following terminals.

look at the diagram and match it up to the plug. if your cars do not start put the key on the on position and then jump the terminals. this will turn the fuel pump on. try cranking the key and see if the vehicle starts.

If it starts then replace your fuel pump main relays. these normally run for about $35.00 a piece at an aftermarket parts store.

Thank you. i hope that this helps you out with your problem. If you believe that i have been a help to you then please accept my answer. Please remember that positive feedback is always greatly appreciated.

This problem is very intermittent but I had a thought and unplugged the main fuel relay ( according to the shop manual inside the car drivers side above the e-brake) to simulate the failure and the car won`t even turn over. When my cars fail they will turn over but not start and then the check engine light comes on. Let them sit and with the key off for a few minutes and they will restart. I hope this helps you solve my problem, if you need any more info please ask! Thanks.

Sounds like you are having a problem with the computer telling the injectors at the wrong time to be open causing flooding of the vehicle.First check all wires at the ecm .If ok can get one from salvage yard.Well hope to have helped.Bonuses greatly appreciated.

Well I checked out all the electrical connections cleaned them and installed die electric grease and swapped out the ECU and it still does it. All I can add is that the hotter it is out the more prone it is to having the failure. Sorry it took so long to get back to you but I had to get a replacement ECU.

There was another customer on the site with the same problem and there was a bulletin some years back about intermittent no start and also one about emissions failure and replacing injectors with updated units. We've been trying to find the 2nd bulletin but haven't found it yet but both 20 year Honda Master Techs remember the bulletin and changing them out and also remember making the ground repair/bulletin as well.

Just in case the code really has nothing to do with it not starting...bring a can of carb or brake cleaner spray with you and when it dies or won't start...spray some into the cast aluminum housing that's on top of the throttle body and try to start it and see what happens...it is very possible that you might have some kind of injector circuit fault but what if it's actually the ignitor (notorious on those and a lot of them were recalled some years back) that's not allowing it to start/no spark condition? You also have the avenue to take the cast aluminum housing off and run it til it dies then have someone turn it over/try to start it and see if at least the primary injector is spraying fuel.

Thanks I will give this a try but as it is very intermittent and seems to happen more the hotter it is (And now it`s cooling down) it may take some time to track this down. But I do appreciate your help and I will let you know as soon as I find something. But please tell me what is the ground repair bulletin I am unaware of this repair. Thanks Bryan!!!
