I have a 1997 Honda Civic with a emissions warranty extension to 14 years. I had the muffler replaced by a non- Honda dealer couple weeks ago because the local Honda dealer was too busy (estimated 3 weeks wait) and called Honda Customer Service at Torrance and gave them all the data plus mileage (70,000). The first lady told me the muffler is covered by the warranty only if Honda dealer replaced it. However, the second lady told me the warranty is good for the first 36,000 miles. Which lady is telling the truth?

Both. The car come from the factory with a 3 year and 36k mile warrenty. If the muffler fails within either of the two timeframes the muffler is covered.

the second is if you have a mufler installed today at 70k miles and 2 years down the road the muffler goes bad its covered. If it fails 10 years down the road its covered. But only if the dealer put it on. The replacement muffler that you pay for and have installed at the dealer has a lifetime warrenty on it.
